A dark red biodynamic Burgundy with only 12.5% alcohol, balancing between comfort and vitality. Good luck finding this for the price! A blend of 66% fruity Pinot Noir and 33% earthy Gamay, typical for the AOC Coteaux Bourguignons* (This AOC has existed since 2011 and is developing as the testing ground of Burgundy with fewer restrictions and certain blends allowed). The initial taste is smoother and fresh, with a silky and generous finish. Notes of strawberry jam, red berries/cherries, and vanilla. The extra year in the bottle elevates the complexity, although it is generally a ready-to-drink type of wine. This wine can certainly be aged, but don’t buy it for storage. It spent 10 months in French oak barrels for added structure and body, yet it remains a light, fresh Burgundy Pinot Noir experience. A wine that can be served in any situation. Its comfortable character pairs exceptionally well with comfort food dishes like lasagna or pizza. Steak Tartare, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Oeufs en Meurette will also complement each other well.
Domaine Luolle is run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne. After a sailing trip around the world (called “Vents d’Anges”), they decided to follow their passion and produce their own wines. Their estate is located in the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. It is a charming estate that has been active in organic farming for three generations. With their motto that translates to “less is more,” they cherish simplicity and chose peace, strength, and freedom as their foundation. As Olivier and Sandrine state, they are the wine, and you can taste what they put into it. They handle everything themselves, from grape selection to vinification and bottling, while continually learning new techniques and knowledge. In the wines of Domaine Luolle, you can taste all the passion that has been put into them.
The Côte Chalonnaise, located south of the prestigious Côte de Beaune, is often an overlooked region in Burgundy. Despite its lesser-known name, this area is gaining popularity due to the excellent price-quality ratio of its wines. While the renowned vineyards of the Côte d'Or often demand high prices, the Côte Chalonnaise offers high-quality wines with a unique character without putting a strain on the wallet. For wine lovers looking to further explore Burgundy, the Côte Chalonnaise is a delightful surprise that proves top wines do not always have to come from the expensive corner.
The Côte Chalonnaise is known for both its red and white wines. The red wines are primarily made from the Pinot Noir grape, while the white wines are often made from the Chardonnay grape. The region is home to various appellations, including Mercurey, Givry, Rully, Bouzeron, and Montagny. The wines from this region often feature a refined structure and a pronounced terroir, giving each bottle its unique character. For example, the red wines from Mercurey are known for their robust yet elegant tannins, while the white wines from Montagny are known for their freshness and minerality.
The wines from the Côte Chalonnaise are versatile and pair well with a wide range of dishes. The fresh Chardonnay wines pair excellently with seafood, light fish dishes, and poultry. They are also perfect with creamy sauces and soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert. The Pinot Noir wines are ideal with poultry, veal, and lighter meat dishes like duck and chicken. They also pair well with earthy dishes such as mushrooms, carrots, and risotto. Both types of wine, both red and white, are suitable for lighter meals or even some desserts.
At Burgundy or Nowhere, you will find an extensive selection of Côte Chalonnaise wines, from well-known names to hidden gems. We are particularly excited about the wines from Domaine de la Luolle, whose Givry and Mercurey impress with their complexity and depth at a reasonable price. Our goal is to offer wines that reflect the quality in the bottle, not just the name on the label.
