A beautiful light red Pinot Noir with complex flavors and a lovely finish. Notes of blackcurrant, cherry, cocoa, and forest floor. Full of round tannins that meld wonderfully at the table. Aging: 10 months in 2- to 4-year-old French oak, 100% barrel-fermented.
Ultimately, it's about what’s inside the bottle, and Latour delivers outstanding quality here. Note! This is not the same Latour you often find in stores. It can be confusing. Are they related? Probably, but distant enough for this Latour to produce excellent wines under the radar.
Unfortunately, Auxey-Duresses has fallen into obscurity. Only about 130 hectares are under vine, comparable to Pernand-Vergelesses, which is overshadowed by its more famous neighbors.
This doesn’t diminish the excellent value of this red wine! Like in AOC Monthélie, many wines were labeled ‘Côte de Beaune-Villages’ until the turn of the century. White wines from Auxey-Duresses were even downgraded to ‘Bourgogne’. But the situation has greatly improved for the once 'stubborn' wines of AOC Auxey-Duresses, possibly due to climate change. The white wines are now aromatic, lively, sometimes slightly nutty, with distinct mineral notes. While perhaps a bit more restrained compared to Meursault, they are nearly unmatched in terms of price-quality ratio.
Red wines from Auxey-Duresses are slowly reaching the level of a fine Volnay. Aging potential: 6 to 8 years.
Under-the-radar Burgundy. We have truly struck gold with the Vieilles Vignes Auxey-Duresses from François and Sylvan Latour. This wine comes from 50- to 70-year-old vines in a village southwest and uphill from Volnay: Auxey-Duresses. It’s the smart Burgundy choice for all kinds of Pinot Noir lovers.
