Forget Meursault & Chassagne-Montrachet?!

Forget Meursault & Chassagne-Montrachet?!

The smartest appellations are overpriced. 🤑 Electric, laser-focused and mineral wines are coming from the Mâconnais these days. Offering amazing tension 💥 at very competitive prices compared to the North of Burgundy 🫰. This is the year to start taking white burgundies from the Mâconnais more serious! The Côte d’Or has just one slope, but the Mâconnais has many different mineral soils and exposures. It's varied nature where vineyards can be over 400m in altitude and with a range of aspects makes the Mâconnais not only a source of very different and complex wine styles, but also place of refuge, should Burgundy’s climate continue to warm. Join our search for exciting Burgundy wine! Sustainable wine from the lesser-known corners of Burgundy where price/quality still go hand in hand. Enjoy a rich and balanced white Burgundy Chardonnay thanks to its constant development in the glass or in the bottle, or the satiny red fruit and complex layering of a red Burgundy Pinot Noir.

Outside the Golden Triangle

A little guidance within the complex world of Burgundy can't hurt. Although we actually only work with a few grape varieties: Chardonnay, Aligoté, Pinot Noir and Gamay... no two wines are the same. Of course there are similarities, but it is the subtle differences that ensure that you connect with the signature of the winemaker. We try to answer the following questions for you: 1. Are you looking for the most ''Value for Money''? 2. Are you looking for clean organic Burgundy wines? 3. The secret of Burgundy? 4. Affordability from the Golden Triangle? 5. Are you looking for exclusivity? 6. Are you looking for full, fatty Burgundy Chardonnay wine? 7. Are you looking for fresh Burgundy Chardonnay wine? 8. Are you looking for something festive or an original gift? 1. Good value for money in Burgundy? Our search begins outside the known areas. Take Coulanges-la-Vineuse or the hamlet of Chitry as an example. When you enter Burgundy from Chablis and head towards Beaune, you pass these villages, but few people take this road. This dares to flirt openly with a Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet, but know that this comes with a friendlier price tag than the wines from the Golden Triangle. Completely on the other south side of Burgundy are villages such as La-Roche-Vineuse where rich Pouilly-Fuissé-like wines are secretly created. Recommendations: Coulanges-la-vineuse, Prestige Blanc, Domaine Houblin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Blanc, Domaine Normand Mâcon-Villages, Happy-Naisse, Domaine de Naisse
2. Are you looking for clean organic Burgundy wines? Then you can't go past the biodynamic Domaine de Luolle (DEMETER) in the village of Moroges, just next to the famous Givry. Since 2017, this young domaine has been making flawless wines that do not need to be drunk but can be enjoyed immediately. Their Givry Blanc Champ Pourot is a beautiful blend of the classic creamy Chardonnay style but is supported by great minerals and floral nose that beautifully reflect the beauty of nature. Recommendations: Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge, Le Cloux de la Roche, Domaine de la Luolle Givry Blanc, Champ Pourot, Domaine de la Luolle Mercurey, Le Balcon, Domaine de la Luolle 3. The best secret of the moment, however, comes from the enchanting yet relatively unknown village of Chardonnay for which you have to take the exit at Tournus. Where the origin of the grape of the same name lies. Here, domaine Vuillemez, while retaining the characteristic features of the Mâconnais region with its culinary bitters and southern riches, manages to bridge the gap with the valued freshness from the north and can thus actually summarize the entire Burgundy in one bottle. 4. Is there such a thing as affordable Burgundy from the Golden Triangle? Meursault or Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet? Of course! At the top of our affordable Burgundy price range (15-35 euros), Denis Carré is currently surprising us. The vineyard "Sous la Velle" is located in Meursault, right?!... but that is not stated on the label of this Burgundy wine. How is that possible? Read this special story of Domaine Carré further on the ''Domaines'' page. Recommendations: Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Rene Lequin-Colin Bourgogne Blanc, Sous La Velle, Domaine Denis Carré Burgundy Hautes Cotes De Beaune Blanc, Domaine Denis Carré

Deep roots

5. Are you looking for exclusivity within Burgundy? Then visit young talent and Micro Vigneronne Aurore Bachelet in Santenay, Côte de Beaune. She has only been working under her own name since 2019. Before that, she was apprenticed to father Vincent Bachelet in Chassagne-Montrachet. With only a few hectares in her possession for the time being, she already knows how to produce special wines. These are editions of only a few hundred bottles! If you want to surprise a Burgundy expert who thought he had tasted everything, try her now affordable white Burgundy wine. From her father's hand, Vincent Bachelet, you can always trust that he puts something special in the bottle. His Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sentier du Clou is a white Burgundy of very high quality, balanced between buttery and mineral freshness. And is usually a bit slimmer compared to Meursault or Chassange-Montrachet and is therefore the textbook example of balance within Burgundy. 6. Are you looking for fresh Burgundy Chardonnay wine? The Chardonnay grape is very versatile and can be molded into many shapes. This grape has basically a very round mouthfeel. But in Burgundy the deep roots give a lot of minerality to the wine. Pick the grapes a little earlier in the summer and then let them develop in steel or concrete tanks and voilá... a dry and fresh Burgundy wine is born. They are often fresher than your average Sauvignon Blanc, but without that grassy element but with explosive fruity acids and minerals that jump off the roundness of the Chardonnay grape. A good example is Domaine Thevenard in Uchizy with their trendsetting fresh Chardonnays of the future. Recommendations: Mâcon-Uchizy, Marguerite, Domaine Thevenard Mâcon-Chardonnay, Tourbillion, Domaine Vuillemez Bourgogne Blanc, Ecume de Terre, Domaine de la Luolle
7. Are you looking for full Burgundy Chardonnay wine? Then you don't have to look much further than Domaine Normand in the village of La Roche Vineuse! With their originally Norman muscles and the southern flair of the Mâconnais, they create rich, buttery Chardonnays with lots of backbone and that typical crème brulee vanilla nose. But as Burgundy defines, also with underpinning fruity acids such as in this example with pineapple, stone fruit and fresh lemons. If we drive a little further to the southernmost point of Burgundy we will reach the villages of Viré and Clessé. Although it has long been tipped as a place for affordable Burgundy, this terroir is also increasingly characterized as a place for gastronomic wines of the highest level that should not be missing from the menu of a star restaurant. The wines from this region often have a nice fat on the bones. Lovers of big tears in the glass will enjoy a glass of Viré-Clessé from Domaine Montbarbon after 18 holes at the adjacent Golf de Mâcon la Salle. The Macon-Village from Domaine Naisse also comes from this corner with the same richness but added to steel and is therefore a little easier to drink, for example with lunch. Recommendations: Mâcon La Roche Vineuse, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Normand Mâcon-Chardonnay, Les Beluses, Domaine Vuillemez Viré Clessé, Selection, Domaine Montbarbon 8. Are you looking for something festive or an original gift? A well-made Crémant de Bourgogne is known for its balanced and harmonious character. The wine has a perfect balance between acidity and sweetness, making it refreshing without being too sour or too sweet. These properties make Crémant de Bourgogne a versatile wine, ideal for various occasions and a wide range of culinary combinations. For those who swear by the power and concentration of Champagne, we also represent some very exclusive Champagne houses that are not available anywhere else. Recommendations: Blanc de Blancs Crémant de Bourgogne, Domaine de la Luolle Champagne Pierre Malingre Reserve Champagne Cuvée Reflet, Clemens Bertrand Champagne 1er Cru, Gounel Lassalle, Terre d'Ancetres Champagne Grand Cru, Classical Music, Franck Riviere

What do we want from Burgundy?

For us, emotion per euro is at the top of our checklist with a conscious price ceiling where we think the most value for money can be found. Whether you are looking for a silky-soft Burgundy Pinot Noir that dances over the tongue or a complex Chardonnay with a backbone, Burgundy or Nowhere is the right place for you! Elegance above all, but of course we also look for other styles within Burgundy because everyone's taste is different. The use of wood should never drown out, but only support. Now we are absolutely not averse to a good lick of vanilla in the nose or a touch of butter in the finale, provided it can be supported by sufficient mineral acids and other qualities that can create tension. The last element in particular is where other wines often miss the mark by trying to appear bigger with excessive use of wood that can be presented in a segmented manner and has no connection at all with the rest of the wine and the story. In addition, minerality is the most beautiful form of freshness to a buttery Burgundy. Finding the ultimate balance between these elements is the greatest challenge I know. I can't repeat it often enough, balance balance balance!
So the power of a good Burgundy wine is where all the flavors tell a story in harmony. And with sufficient oxygen in the glass or with age on the bottle, it can also tell different stories and which in turn can be translated in several ways! The length of a good Burgundy is measured by how long the taste remains in balance. There are plenty of wines with lots of vanilla-like wood flavor notes towards the finale where the attack tells a completely different story. At first this seems like a special wine with diverse flavors, but that also makes the wine tiring in the long run. The extent to which a creamy Chardonnay is balanced from start to finish with refreshing fruity acidity means that the wine will never be boring. That is the real art of Burgundy! Most of our range carries the HVE, BIO, DEMETER quality mark. We are not specifically looking for organic wine, but we do notice that the liveliness of ORGANIC wine scores much higher than non-organically produced wine. HVE, Haute Valeur Environnementale emphasizes various sustainability aspects, with an emphasis on promoting biodiversity in vineyards. The HVE logo on a wine bottle does not automatically indicate that it is organic wine, unless the wine is actually certified organic. Nevertheless, the logo signals the winegrower's commitment to sustainable vineyard management. In organic and biodynamic (DEMETER) viticulture, chemical pesticides and fertilizers are prohibited, which is not only more environmentally friendly, but also promotes the quality and vitality of both the vine and the soil. Organic viticulture, with traditional craftsmanship, results in wines of higher quality, more complexity and terroir expression. Biodynamic winegrowers integrate cosmic influences such as the position of the moon and stars, use special preparations as an alternative to fertilizers, and place even greater emphasis on biodiversity in the vineyard.

Sample by @ Reinoud ; This wine certainly has character! Apple, stone fruit, melon and some latent tropical fruit, pleasantly reductive in the first moments with a sulphurous nose, refined citrus, mineral, soft chamomile, everything is refined and subtle. Very nice wine 🥂👌

Belle robe jaune pâle. Bouquet doux d'agrumes. Corps vif, peu sucré, très fruité. Belles notes de pommes vertes et de pamplemousse. Corps frais, vraiment vert et jeune. Superbe découverte.

Best classic Maconnais. Tourbillon has the necessary filling, but not too tropical (it has an edge) and a nice freshness. Drinks a bit easier than Beluses, the latter is more generous and more gastronomic.

Beluses versus Tourbillon. Preference goes out to the Tourbillon. Is a bit more slender, has some spiciness/greenness to it. Actually creates a bit more tension. This is not Maconnais as most people think everything from this region would be. Cool glass!
